Not all sunglasses are created equal. There are many sunglasses available that do not offer UV protection. The lenses are simply tinted, or there is a coating that is on the lens that is easily removed after several cleanings or wear. A good quality pair of sunglasses will have the UV protection embedded in the lens. This gives maximum protection from the sun’s UV light rays.

Getting a pair of lenses polarized helps cut down on glare that is being reflected from the sun from various surfaces. This will make driving during the day easier, as glare is reduced from reflective surfaces of other vehicles. Polarization is also a must if you are out on the water, for fishing, or for boating. The glare from the surface of the water is reduced allowing more comfortable vision, reducing squinting, which can cause wrinkles, and allowing vision to be enhanced from the distractions of the reflected light.

Dry eye affects as many as 1 in 5 people.  Severity can vary, but many symptoms are the same: burning, redness, sandy or gritty feeling, and even watery eyes.  These symptoms can become worse when winter is here, because the air is dryer. Most people will use some eye drops that they can get over-the-counter.  This will provide temporary relief in some cases.  However, most patients require prescription eye drops as well as other therapies, including punctal occlusion and/or nutritional supplements.  The cause of the dry eye should be determined by a routine eye examination and then appropiate course of therapy can be determined.

At Williams and Hussey Eyecare, we are committed to technology upgrades.  The Optical Coherence Tomographer, or OCT by Zeiss, provides the latest in diagnostic insight for a broad range of ocular diseases. 

The OCT uses a near-infrared frequency light that reveals a cross-sectional view of retinal layers.  This allows our doctors to examine the eyes of our patients more meticulously than ever.  The OCT will aid in detecting very minor changes in the layers of the retina that are associated with diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, along with other diseases of the eye.  The earlier these changes are detected, the sooner treatment can begin and vision be saved or restored.

The Children’s Vision Law has been in place now for one year and has had great success in the state of Missouri.  All children entering kindergarten are required to have a comprehensive eye examination by a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist.  Comprehensive eye examinations diagnose: Amblyopia (“lazy eye”), which affects 5% of children, Color vision deficiencies (color blindness), which affects 8% of all boys, myopia (“near-sightedness”), hyperopia (“far-sightedness”) and astigmatism.  Theses are common problems that can easily be treated with proper care.  Schedule an appointment today with Dr. Scott Hussey or Dr. Shelley Williams at Williams and Hussey Eyecare.
