Summer is in full swing and getting outdoors to enjoy the weather is a must. Protecting your eyes from Ultraviolet light is just as important as using sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. If you are going to the lake for fun in the sun, going to a ball game, or just lounging by the pool or in the backyard, don’t forget a quality pair of sunglasses to maximize your vision and protect your eyes from the sun’s damaging rays.

Not all sunglasses are created equal. There are many sunglasses available that do not offer UV protection. The lenses are simply tinted, or there is a coating that is on the lens that is easily removed after several cleanings or wear. A good quality pair of sunglasses will have the UV protection embedded in the lens. This gives maximum protection from the sun’s UV light rays.

Getting a pair of lenses polarized helps cut down on glare that is being reflected from the sun from various surfaces. This will make driving during the day easier, as glare is reduced from reflective surfaces of other vehicles. Polarization is also a must if you are out on the water, for fishing, or for boating. The glare from the surface of the water is reduced allowing more comfortable vision, reducing squinting, which can cause wrinkles, and allowing vision to be enhanced from the distractions of the reflected light.

As Spring arrives, so do allergy symptoms for many. These include itchy, red, watery, or swollen eyes. Many people can control their seasonal allergies by using an oral medication that is prescribed from their doctor or is available over-the-counter at the pharmacy. For others, symptoms are more severe and the experise of an eyecare professional is necessary for relief. Eye drops are regularly prescribed for allergic conjunctivitis. For some cases, an over-the-counter drop can control symptoms. For others, a stronger, prescription only drop is required to alleviate symptoms. Dry Eye Relief

Dry eye affects as many as 1 in 5 people. Severity can vary, but many symptoms are the same: burning, redness, sandy or gritty feeling, and even watery eyes. These symptoms can become worse when winter is here, because the air is dryer. Most people will use some eye drops that they can get over-the-counter. This will provide temporary relief in some cases. However, most patients require prescription eye drops as well as other therapies, including punctal occlusion and/or nutritional supplements. The cause of the dry eye should be determined by a routine eye examination and then appropiate course of therapy can be determined.

At Williams and Hussey Eyecare, we are committed to technology upgrades. The Optical Coherence Tomographer, or OCT by Zeiss, provides the latest in diagnostic insight for a broad range of ocular diseases.

The OCT uses a near-infrared frequency light that reveals a cross-sectional view of retinal layers. This allows our doctors to examine the eyes of our patients more meticulously than ever. The OCT will aid in detecting very minor changes in the layers of the retina that are associated with diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, along with other diseases of the eye. The earlier these changes are detected, the sooner treatment can begin and vision be saved or restored.

The Children’s Vision Law has been in place now for one year and has had great success in the state of Missouri. All children entering kindergarten are required to have a comprehensive eye examination by a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist.
